Licensing and Trademarks
Licensing
Mozilla's software is open source software that is licensed to
end users under the terms of the
Mozilla Public License.
This license allows you to modify and distribute
our code free of charge and without our permission, subject to
certain restrictions. Please visit the
Licensing Terms page for additional information.
Trademarks
Our code is free - but we do strictly enforce our trademark rights. Our trademarks include, among others, the names Mozilla, Bugzilla and XUL, the Firefox name and logo, the Mozilla text logo and the red lizard logo. This means that,
while you have considerable freedom to modify and redistribute our
software, there are tight restrictions on your ability to use the
Mozilla name and logos, even when built into binaries that we provide.
Redistributing unmodified versions of our software
If you are redistributing unmodified versions of a final release of our software as made available on ftp.mozilla.org, you may use the Mozilla name and logos to identify the software. We do ask that you make a reasonable effort to ship recent versions of our software at all times (using old versions means your users will miss out on new features and are more likely to experience bugs which have already been fixed, including security bugs). No further approvals are needed.
This provision is intended to cover situations like mirroring mozilla.org binaries, and distributing them on free software CDs, magazine coverdiscs and the like.
You may advertise that you are shipping or selling Mozilla and
use our logos to identify our software.
"Unmodified" means without any changes whatsoever (no
changes to the start page, or bookmarks, for instance).
Fair use
Approval is not required for the following fair uses of the Mozilla marks:
- screenshots of our software or our web site in magazine articles or reviews of our software
- the inclusion of Mozilla browser windows in screenshots of other web sites for non-commercial uses such as web site reviews
- on-screen displays of Mozilla products in television programs or movies.
Approval is not required to put buttons expressing your support for Mozilla or our software on your web site, including the Get Firefox buttons or similar buttons you may create yourself. Note that mozilla.org disapproves of "Best viewed with" buttons; we believe the web is best viewed with
any standards-compliant browser.
Approval is also not needed to textually link to mozilla.org or our software.
Other uses
All other uses of the Mozilla
marks require prior written permission.
Please send mail to
for all trademark permission enquiries, or to obtain a copy of the Mozilla
Trademark License Agreement.
